چکیده

This paper is mainly concerned with the relation-algebraical aspects of the well-known Region Connection Calculus (RCC). We show that the contact relation algebra (CRA) of certain RCC model is not atomic complete and hence infinite. So in general an extensional composition table for the RCC cannot be obtained by simply refining the RCC8 relations. After having shown that each RCC model is a consistent model of the RCC11 CT, we give an exhaustive investigation about extensional interpretation of the RCC11 CT, where we attach a superscript × to a cell entry in the table if and only if extensional interpretation is impossible for this entry. More important, we show the complemented closed disk algebra is a representation for the relation algebra determined by the RCC11 table. The domain of this algebra contains two classes of regions, the closed disks and closures of their complements in the real plane, and the contact relation is standard Whiteheadean contact (i.e. aCb iff a ∩ b 6= ∅).

Qualitative Spatial Reasoning with Topological Relations in the Situation Calculus

We use a qualitative theory of spatial change and illustrate some of the key representational aspects of specifying such a theory using a formalism to reason about action & change; an effort that we regard to be essential toward a general integration of qualitative spatial reasoning with reasoning about the dynamic, causal aspects of spatial change. A topological theory of space, namely the reg...

Extending the Qualitative Trajectory Calculus Based on the Concept of Accessibility of Moving Objects in the Paths

Qualitative spatial representation and reasoning are among the important capabilities in intelligent geospatial information system development. Although a large contribution to the study of moving objects has been attributed to the quantitative use and analysis of data, such calculations are ineffective when there is little inaccurate data on position and geometry or when explicitly explaining ...

A Necessary Relation Algebra for Mereotopology

We show that the basic operations of the relational calculus on a “contact relation” generate at least 25 relations in any model of the Region Connection Calculus [33], and we show how to interpret these relations in the collection of regular open sets in the two-dimensional Euclidean plane.

On the Complexity of Qualitative Spatial Reasoning: A Maximal Tractable Fragment of the Region Connection Calculus

The computational properties of qualitative spatial reasoning have been investigated to some degree. However, the question for the boundary between polynomial and NP-hard reasoning problems has not been addressed yet. In this paper we explore this boundary in the \Region Connection Calculus" RCC-8. We extend Bennett's encoding of RCC-8 in modal logic. Based on this encoding, we prove that reaso...

Multidimensional Region Connection Calculus

The best way to support commonsense reasoning over geographic data is via qualitative spatial reasoning over spatial objects and their relations. The Region Connection Calculus (RCC) (Randell et al. 1992) family is one of the well-known logical languages for formalizing topological relationships that describe commonsense spatial knowledge. In this paper, we modify and extend RCC-8 to propose a ...
